Ms. Hannafin is a licensed attorney in the state of Massachusetts and a Manager in MFA’s State and Local Tax Practice. She works with clients of all sizes to assist in matters regarding the full suite of state and local tax issues. In her role, Lauren reviews organizations’ state tax nexus footprints from a sales and use tax and income/non-net income tax perspective to develop state tax planning and filing methodologies. As part of this review, she assesses whether a business’ products and services are subject to state and local sales and use tax, business licensing requirements to operate by state, available state tax exemptions and noteworthy contract considerations.
Lauren manages all steps of the voluntary disclosure process including drafting requests for acceptance into state voluntary disclosure programs, negotiating terms of voluntary disclosure agreements, coordinating required registration and tax filings and preparing penalty waiver requests. In addition, she advises clients regarding issues related to payroll taxes including state withholding requirements, state unemployment contributions and the classification of individuals as employees or independent contractors.
Prior to MFA, Lauren served as a legal analyst for the City of Boston Retirement Board where she gained valuable knowledge of the state court and administrative system.
